The other day, on my favorite meditation app – InsightTimer, there was this quote, from Anais Nin:
“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage”
And it hit me so hard. I just couldn’t wait to repost it. Because it is so true!
But instead of a plain and simple repost, I thought I would add some stories to it. So here it is:
I have been through many many many difficult moments in my Life.
That got me sick to my stomach sometimes because they were so Life changing.
I knew at that moment that if I took that leap, my Life would never ever be the same.
And most of the times I was losing something with that decision - Jobs, Relationships, Family, Money, even my Country once.
And you know what the few people that stayed by my side were saying?
“Wow, Marianne, you are so brave!”
I didn’t feel brave then.
I was simply and plainly terrified. I may have been excited a few times, but in the darkest moments, I was terrified.
But I had that gut wrenching feeling that if I did not take this leap, Life will also never changed and staying was even more unbearable than leaving.
Though I have to say, it didn’t take only one hint. Sometimes it took months or even years of hints. Of on and off, of fights after fights, of pain after pain, disappointment and misunderstandings, and disrespect. Of me playing small, to not rock the boat, to not hurt anybody.
I was so tired, I just wanted to be.
But my body would tell me.
My back would hurt, my skin would itch, my body would smell, my mind would never stop.
I was shrinking, contracting, working myself into a box that was too small for me. And expansion, freedom, peace, light was calling me.
One of my clients told me one day “People just don’t tell you what Life really is, nobody prepares you”.
And it’s true.
Nobody prepares you for what you are going to have to go through.
Because you are the only one fit for that step.
But Life never gives you more than what you can handle.
Sometimes She is going to push real hard, because we have this gift of never learning easily!
But when you jump, when you break the patterns, when you take your life back, I can assure you that Life will expand indeed.
If you are able to embrace it fully, let your heart guide you down to your destination, you will find that spark that ignited you into leaving your box. That fire inside of you that said that you were worth so much more. That you deserved a real home, health, ground to rest on, confidence, empowerment, freedom, wealth,….
And it doesn’t all come at once and you are done with it. This is not true either.
The best of us will learn this faster. But really, your first leap will teach you what you need to know for the next one.
It will teach you what you need to listen to, to limit how far down you have to go before going up again.
It will teach how to take care of yourself through the most stormy moments and what you need to remember then.
And it will teach you how worth it it is to go through the transformation. For that expansive, peaceful, relaxed feeling of love that you experience after the storm.
So how much do you want your Life to expand today?
How much courage do you have left in you?
Having gone through my experiences alone, I am the very first one to know how much I wished I had had someone to guide me, to support me, to show up with me, with no judgements, no opinions, but somewhat of a map, to at least land safely somewhere nice, to understand my heart and my calling.
